Virginia General Assembly Passes School Choice Legislation

Last week, the Virginia General Assembly approved legislation that would offer tax credits to individuals or corporations that donate to nonprofit organizations providing scholarships to low-income students or students with disabilities to attend the private schools of their choice.

The legislation awaits the governor’s signature before becoming law. Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell supports school choice and is expected to sign a final version of the bill into law in the near future.

"I am happy for Virginia families who will now be more able to find better educational and social environments for their children," said Ben Scafidi, Director of Education Policy for the Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program. "And, I welcome Virginia to the growing number of states that are allowing families to have greater school choice."

Virginia will be the 14th state nationwide to pass this type of scholarship tax credit program. This particular school choice program will have an annual cap of $25 million.
